The Mexico City Benemérito Mexico Temple is currently in the planning stages. No groundbreaking date has been announced.

Temple Site

On October 31, 2022, the location of the Mexico City Benemérito Mexico Temple was announced as a former recreational area at the Mexico City Missionary Training Center at Tenayuca-Chalmita 828 in Colonia Zona Escolar of Gustavo A. Madero. Plans call for a two-story temple of approximately 29,000 square feet.¹

Temple Announcement

On April 3, 2022, President Russell M. Nelson announced plans to construct the Mexico City Benemérito Mexico Temple at the April 2022 General Conference. This will be the 19th temple in Mexico and the second in Mexico City. The Benemérito grounds have a rich history for Mexican Latter-day Saints. Founded in 1964 by The Church of Jesus Christ, El Centro Escolar Benemérito de las Américas was a high school until 2013, when it was converted to serve as a Missionary Training Center for Spanish-language missionaries. The campus is located about 10 miles from the Mexico City Mexico Temple. Nearly 9 million people reside in Mexico City alone, making it one of the largest cities in Latin America. The country is home to 1.5 million Latter-day Saints in more than 1,800 congregations.

Missionary work began in Mexico in 1875. The were 18 other temples in Mexico at the time of the temple's announcement including the Ciudad Juárez Mexico Temple, Colonia Juárez Chihuahua Mexico Temple, Culiacán Mexico Temple, Guadalajara Mexico Temple, Hermosillo Sonora Mexico Temple, Mérida Mexico Temple, Mexico City Mexico Temple, Monterrey Mexico Temple, Oaxaca Mexico Temple, Puebla Mexico Temple, Querétaro Mexico Temple, San Luis Potosí Mexico Temple, Tampico Mexico Temple, Tijuana Mexico Temple, Torreón Mexico Temple, Tuxtla Gutiérrez Mexico Temple, Veracruz Mexico Temple and Villahermosa Mexico Temple.²

The Mexico City Benemérito Mexico Temple will be the eighth temple built in the same city as another operating temple, the Mexico City Mexico Temple (1983), making Mexico City, Mexico, the eighth city in the world to have more than one temple, following South Jordan, Utah; Provo, Utah; Lima, Peru; St. George, Utah; Guatemala City, Guatemala; Rexburg, Idaho; and Santiago, Chile.

The Mexico City Benemérito Mexico Temple will be the sixth temple built outside of the United States in the same metropolitan area as another operating temple, making Greater Mexico City the sixth metropolitan area outside of the United States with more than one temple, following the Lima metropolitan area in Peru, the Greater Manila Area in the Philippines, the Guatemala City metropolitan area in Guatemala, Greater São Paulo in Brazil, and the Santiago Metropolitan Region in Chile.
