Temple Announcement

On April 7, 2024, President Russell M. Nelson announced plans to construct the Houston Texas South Temple at the 194th Annual General Conference. It will be the second temple in the Houston area and the ninth in the state. The Houston Texas Temple was dedicated in August 2000 and rededicated in April 2018 following flooding caused by Hurricane Harvey. Missionaries of the Church of Jesus Christ first visited Texas in 1843, and membership growth has increased rapidly in recent decades with 210,000 members in 2000 and more than 385,000 members and around 750 congregations in 2024. The other temples in Texas at the time of the announcement included the Austin Texas Temple, Dallas Texas Temple, Fort Worth Texas Temple, Houston Texas Temple, Lubbock Texas Temple, McAllen Texas Temple, McKinney Texas Temple and San Antonio Texas Temple.1

Temple Facts

The Houston Texas South Temple will be the twelfth temple built in the same city as another operating temple, the Houston Texas Temple (2000), making Houston, Texas, the twelfth city in the world to have more than one temple, following South Jordan, Utah; Provo, Utah; Lima, Peru; St. George, Utah; Guatemala City, Guatemala; Rexburg, Idaho; Santiago, Chile; Mexico City, Mexico; Las Vegas, Nevada; Buenos Aires, Argentina; and Brisbane, Australia.
