Temple Announcement

On October 1, 2023, President Russell M. Nelson announced plans to construct the Cancún Mexico Temple at the October 2023 General Conference. Cancún is located on the eastern coast of the Yucatán Peninsula of Mexico and has a metro population of more than 1 million people. It will be the first temple built in the state of Quintana Roo. The Cancún Mexico Temple will be the 24th house of the Lord in the country. At the time of the announcement, dedicated temples in Mexico were found in Ciudad Juárez, Colonia Juárez, Guadalajara, Hermosillo, Mérida, Mexico City, Monterrey, Oaxaca, Tampico, Tijuana, Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Veracruz and Villahermosa. There were also temples under construction or announced in Cuernavaca, Culiacán, Mexico City Benemérito, Pachuca, Puebla, Querétaro, San Luis Potosí, Toluca, Torreón and Tula. Mexico is home to nearly 1.5 million Latter-day Saints in more than 1,800 congregations. Missionary work began in Mexico in 1875.1
